Mt. Union Association
Pleasant Hill Church History
Pleasant Hill General Baptist Church origin was through the efforts of old time brush arbor meetings conducted by Ephraim B. Stinson. He later became the church's first pastor. The accepted, but not confirmed, organization date is May 23, 1878. It is believed there were approximately 17 charter members. Pleasant Hill Church became a part of the Mt. Union Association on Saturday, August 17, 1878. There have been 3 different church buildings in our history. The first church was a log building located roughly 50 feet south of the present church. It is undetermined if this one was a converted dwelling or built exclusively for the church.

From the 1890 Mt.Union Association minutes, " We commend the membership and friends of said church for the zeal and taste manifested in erecting their new house of worship." This church was used for the next 62 years until a called meeting was held on Monday night April 14, 1952 and it was voted to build a new church. At the next regular conference meeting, it was passed to take the old church down and purchase the material for the new church. The present church auditorium stands on the same site as that of the frame church.

During construction of the present church, worship service was held in the Pleasant Hill School, which stood south of the present church on the bank across the road. The school building was later moved to the Macon County High School and used as a field house, later being torn down. In the conference meeting of September 9, 1998, the church accepted the school bell, which was donated to the church in memory of former teachers of the school. The bell was erected in the churchyard.

On December 18, 1937, the church voted to get house lights installed (electricity) and a commitee was appointed " to see where to put the lights." Before obtaining city water, the church received it's water supply from a spring. There was also a hand dug well located on the then southeast corner near the road. ( It was filled in later when it was no longer being used.) A bucket of water with a dipper for drinking set in the church during these times. Men and women's outdoor toilets were used prior to 1974, when the church then added indoor facilities and city water.

In times past, worship service was held only once a month that being on the third Sunday, conference was on the Saturday night before. The church voted in the April 1959 conference to go on full time worship schedule.Conference meeting is now held the second Wednesday night of each month. On May 11, 1960 it was voted to build Sunday school rooms onto the church.

Pleasant Hill Church has been host to the Mt. Union Association the following years: 1881, 1886, 1890, 1899, 1927, and 1954. In 1972 the Mt. Union Association Tabernacle was built and has since been the site of the yearly association.

The church has held Vacation Bible School intermittently since 1967. Each Christmas, county-nursing homes are visted, gifts are given to each resident and music programs are performed. During this time, the church goes Christmas caroling to the shut-ins of the church. Also each Christmas, needy children and their families are guest of the church with a program, gifts and food.

A singing school was started January 11, 1998 and from this, the church choir was born. The singing school and choir are currently under the direction of church member Jeff Gregory. The choir has performed at various churches in surrounding counties.

The building fund was activated October 14, 1998, with the purpose and intent to build a fellowship hall and add onto the church auditorium. It was voted May 12, 1999 to purchase a church steeple. Fellow church members erected the steeple on December 27, 1999.

At the present time December 2002, work is almost finished on the new addition to the church auditorium. We have still got a few minor things to be added such as choir chairs and a sound system. The fellowship hall is not completely finished, but work is still being done to try and accomplish this goal.
