Mt. Union Association
Miller's Chapel Church History
Miller’s Chapel General Baptist Church was organized in the Miller’s Chapel Shoolhouse in the Wixtown Community of Macon County, Tennessee. For many years prior to 1954, many revivals and brusharbor meetings were held in and nearby the schoolhouse. On September 10, 1954, Miller’s Chapel Church was organized with nine charter members. The church was organized by Rev. W. A. Davis, Rev. Vergil Willis, Rev. William Everette Lyles, and Rev. R.O. Cook. Rev. Rufus Overton Cook was elected the first pastor and Bro. Oakley Harp was elected the first clerk. About two weeks later, the church was accepted into The Mt. Union Association during the 79th setting held at Pleasant Hill Church. There were nine charter members and eleven first members at the time the church was received into the Association. These members were Oakley Harp, Frances Harp, J.C. Scruggs, Gladys Scruggs, Kirksey Wix, Maggie Wix, Marie Sanders, James Wix, Claude Slayton, Bell Slayton, and Melvin Clark.
Services were held in the shoolhouse until the first church was built in 1955. Miller’s Chapel School was named after the Frank Miller family that gave the land for the school. The schoolhouse was destroyed by fire about 1957. Delmer and Dean Frye donated the land, where the church was built. This land was located across the road and diagonally from the schoolhouse (southeast).
The pastors have been Rev. R.O. Cook 1954-56, Rev. Vernie Miller 1956-61 and 1965-67, Rev. Willie C. Taylor 1961-63, Rev. Harold King, 1963-65 and 1969-75, Rev. Jerry Wix 1968-69, Rev. Clinton Davenport 1975-76, Rev. Robert Carlene Kirby 1976-78, 1983-86, and 1991-92, Rev. James Phillip Cook 1978-79, Rev. Lewie Woods 1979-83, Rev. James Edward Jones 1986-88, Rev. Larry Sloan 1988-91, Rev. Artis Eugene Keen 1992-96, Rev. Billy Freeman Jr. 1996-1999, and Rev. Kimble Willoughby began his pastorate in 1999.
The past deacons have been Brethren Oakley Harp, Kirksey Wix, Claude Slayton, Dewey Brawner, Joe King, Delmer Frye, and David Scruggs. The present deacons are Brethren Odis Howser, Hollis Scruggs, Randell Wix, Jerry Howser, and Mark Jenkins.

Sunday School Superintendents have been Elmer Scruggs, Claude Slayton, Oakley Harp, Delmer Frye, Hollis Wix, Hollis Scruggs, Dewey Brawner, Randell Wix, Danny McCormick, Rocky Wix, Mark Jenkins, David Scruggs, Stacy Jones, and Ricky Wilson. The Sunday School has received the attendance banners for growth on different occasions through the years.
In December 1972, the church voted to build a new church building. The pastor, Rev. Harold King, appointed Bro. Oakley Harp and Bro. Delmer Frye for the Building Committee, and Bro. Hollis Scruggs and Bro. Dewey Brawner on the Finance Committee. The Dedication service for the new church was held in July 1975, with Rev. Alburn Gilliam preaching the sermon.
In October 1978, the church voted to build Sunday School rooms in the basement of the church.
In October 1988, the church voted to build a covered food shelter in the back of the church.
In September 1993, the church voted to build bathrooms and hallway onto the front of the church.
In August 1998, the church purchased a lot of property to begin a church cemetery.
Many additions and other improvements have been added through the years, but the greatest additions to the church is not to the building itself but is that of the many souls that have meet Jesus as their Savior at the church.
